The Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering seeks a Part‐Time Administrator (50%) for the W. M. Keck Earth Science and Mineral Engineering Museum located in the historic Mackay School of Mines Building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. The Museum houses a world class collection of minerals, ores and fossil specimens, in addition to mining‐related artifacts. A special emphasis is placed on early Nevada mining history with samples from famous mineral districts such as the Comstock Lode, Tonopah and Goldfield. The Museum is also home to part of the famed Mackay Silver Collection, created by Tiffany & Co., for John Mackay in 1878.
The ideal candidate for this position will have curatorial and/or administrative experience in a museum or educational institution, and a working knowledge of minerals and mining history. The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, leadership ability in educational outreach; and the ability to manage a graduate research assistant, volunteers and interns and foster a work environment of teamwork and dedication.
A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with an emphasis or major in Earth Sciences, or Museum Studies is required. A Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience, Master’s degree and two years, or a Doctorate and one year of experience in the geosciences or museum administration is required.
