NBMG Earth Science Week Field Trip 2017
Location of trip: Carson Valley

We hope you can join us on Saturday, October 21 as geoscientists from Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology explain the geology of the Carson Valley—in celebration of Earth Science Week 2017 and the importance of earth sciences to the people of the state of Nevada.

NBMG coordinates annual geology field trips for the public during, or near, Earth Science Week. These field trips are fun, educational, family oriented, and always free. NBMG has been an active participant in Earth Science Week since it began in 1998.

Details and signup for the October 21 trip will be coming soon!

Major stops on this field trip will include the following:

  • A “young” one-million-year-old cinder cone volcano
  • Evidence of major valleys flowing from central Nevada to the Pacific Ocean before the uplift of the Sierra Nevada Mountains
  • Recently active earthquake faults
  • Geothermal springs
  • The 2014 Hot Spring Mountain flood and debris flows

Trip leaders will be Seth Dee, Bridget Ayling, and Chris Henry.

National Earth Science Week website:

Earth Science Week is October 8-14, 2017.

“The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce that the theme of Earth Science Week 2017 is “Earth and Human Activity.” This year’s event, the 20th annual Earth Science Week celebration, promotes awareness of what geoscience tells us about human interaction with the planet’s natural systems and processes.”
