NBMG coordinates annual geology field trips for the public during, or near, Earth Science Week. NBMG has been an active participant in Earth Science Week since it began in 1998.

Due to the coronovirus, NBMG will not lead a physical field trip this year. Instead, sometime during Earth Science Week, details will be released about the NBMG virtual field trip and story map on the Hot Springs Mountains northeast of Fernley. Topics will include the geology and natural history of the area, mining activities, and hot springs and geothermal energy.

Focus Days

“Since October 1998, the American Geosciences Institute has organized this national and international event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth. This year’s Earth Science Week will be held from October 11–17, 2020 and will celebrate the theme “Earth Materials in Our Lives.” The coming year’s event will focus on the ways that Earth materials impact humans—and the ways human activity impacts these materials—in the 21st century.”
