Student Worker Position, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at UNR

USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program

Schedule: Summer 2022, with the option of extending through Fall 2022

Work location: Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library, 2175 Raggio Pkwy. Reno NV

Job description:

Responsibility A (50%):

We are seeking a highly motivated student worker for digitization of historic Nevada well logs (geothermal and oil and gas industry data, such as borehole temperature and rock properties). The student worker will be trained in the use of Neuralog, a premier digitization software used in the geoscience sector. This position supports active renewable energy research at the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy, NBMG at UNR. Digitized well data are more accessible and machine-readable than their hard-copy counterparts. Help us to preserve critical data resources for the geoscience community and support Nevada’s growing geothermal sector, while gaining a familiarity with modern digitization techniques, data management best practices, and borehole dataset types.

Responsibility B (50%):

The student worker will also assist data preservation tasks such as metadata creation, scanning paper materials, photographing drill core, and other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor. The individual in this position must have great attention to detail, as work products will be submitted to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The individual must also be willing to complete miscellaneous tasks as needed, such as inventory and organizing of materials and occasionally assisting walk-in customers with information. This is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with scientific metadata and data management while collaborating on a USGS project.

This is a 3-month full-time summer position with optional continuation at part-time into the coming fall semester. Summer work will be performed at NBMG’s Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library located at 2175 Raggio Pkwy (GBSSRL) beside the Desert Research Institute. The GBSSRL is a unique resource facility that collects, catalogs, and develops databases for geologic samples, exploratory cores, drill-hole logs, geologic and mine maps, rock assays, mining records and reports, aerial photographs, and many other items related to the geology, geologic hazards, and the mineral and energy resources of Nevada.
